Super MAGFest 2026 Artist Alley Review

My MAGFest Artist Alley Booth

MAGFest has several child events in other locations but Super MAGFest is the flagship in National Harbour, MD, right across the way from Washington DC. The event takes place in the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, but has shuttles to the convention centre from other hotel locations. It is a 24-hour con, so events run all day.

This is the first year I’ve been to it, and also my second flying con. The badges entirely sold out this year, so it was a closed event and no more badges could be bought. We flew in and DCA is only a 20-25ish minute ride to the con so the rideshare price wasn’t too bad. I was kind of worried when I found out the con was 24 hours, because what happens when we leave the exhibition hall and attendees can freely roam about? In the end it wasn’t bad at all. You just put a tablecloth over your booth like normal, maybe put one in back and leave and people are respectful of that. I don’t think I had any of my stuff stolen, at least any of the big stuff.

Peeling Your Acrylic Keychain Charms

It happens once in a blue moon, but they’re rather memorable events – a customer at a convention will come back to me in a huff complaining their keychain is scratched and they want a new one. So I explain to them, and then peel it in front of them. They always look apologetic after and say they didn’t know. And that’s fine! If you’re new to buying acrylic products, you probably don’t know!

It’s being protected with plastic!

Every item made of acrylic (keychains, acrylic pins, standees, etc.) comes with a protective plastic film* on it that keeps the actual acrylic surface from being scratched up during manufacturing. This film tends to be rough and scratched up already after being handled and shipped. Sometimes you’ll be able to peel it off quite easily, but most of the time it’s still stuck on pretty well. (Some artists actually peel their acrylics before sending it to customers, but I don’t risk it getting scratched or damaged during shipping.)

With your fingernail or a coin, you can either scratch the edges or the hole in which the key clasp is attached by–that tends to be a section that’s more loose with the film. Eventually the film will give way and you can peel it off to reveal the image as it was meant to be shown.

Now personally, keep mine on until it’s falling off, to extend the lifetime of the keychain. If it’s been used until the film falls off, that just means it gets a bonus life with the now-pristine image showing, doesn’t it?

*The exception to this is if the item has an epoxy (resin) finish. Usually this is listed in the item description!

My Experience with Class101: It’s awful!

Back in December I saw that an artist I really liked was going to be teaching a class on a site called “Class101.” I had previous experience with these types of sites, using Udemy and hearing of Skillshare, but this was a new one.

So this review is about Class101, a Korean site in which artists or crafters can apply to teach a course to students, usually somewhere like $100-$200 per person to sign up (instructor sets the price). It runs for a set period of time (mine was five months, not sure if this is per course or not), and essentially you watch videos the instructor prepared and do homework assignments that get you closer to earning a Completion status on the class. The instructor is expected to comment on and help students via their homework/comments.

The artist’s colour usage is amazing, so I thought I’d be learning their thoughts on colours and how to use them and I was excited to level up.

Alas, as an intermediate artist, this was the biggest waste of money and I won’t do it again!

Grand Rapids Comic Con Summer Bash 2021 Artist Alley Review

Once again, Grand Rapids Comic Con is another event I had never been to before! Originally it was slated for November 2020, but then Covid of course happened and then this event split into two – a Summer Bash (was first Spring Fling), and then the actual event in November.

Dokidokon 2021 Artist Alley Review

Dokidokon 2021 Artist Alley Booth

This was the first time I’ve been to this event. I first came upon hearing Dokidokon when I attended a tiny Halloween con set up by them in 2019. The staff were kind and the area was not too far of a drive, so I decided to apply. I didn’t know what to expect about this, but I had heard it was nice.
